Rancho da Flórida wins the BALA for Green Custom Home at the International Builder's Show in Las Vegas! The home sits on a working 40-acre ranch. The structure is made up of three primary volumes, each separated by generous dog trots, and all under one butterfly roof.

SEATHRU HOUSE. This project started with an effort to preserve and restore a mid-century modern gem. The original house was a great example of our local mid-century vernacular, but it was in a state of deterioration that required heavy repair. FEMA regulations prevented our efforts. The features that were most attractive about that old house became important parts of the design program.
On a site overlooking the widest part of Sarasota Bay, the Osprey Landing house masterfully integrates living space and landscape. Approaching the house, you cross a forecourt garden ascending a series of terraces to arrive at the front door.
PLATINUM—SEATHRU HOUSE Created to preserve the views, the SeaThru house was built with large, expansive windows facing the waterfront to allow everyone to appreciate the views of the Sarasota Bay. All spaces in the SeaThru house, even the guesthouse at the extreme eastern side of the site, are afforded the same wide open views. The master bathroom is no exception. Designed with uninterrupted glass from bedroom to bathroom, with no wall or door to break the space, the bathroom capitalizes on the waterfront.
The transparent Great Room, at the core of SeaThru House, simultaneously affords generous views to the bay from nearly every point on the property, while also seamlessly linking the interior and exterior space. The small guest suite to the east of the site was organized to take full advantage of the site lines through the floor-to-ceiling glass, while the cantilevered den space was "pulled" aside to avoid blocking those same views.
Osprey Landing
– Durability, energy and water efficiency, indoor air quality, healthy site considerations, material selections and waste reduction were primary project goals in the design and construction of this modern beauty. The vicinity of this site to the airport carried additional testing for sound mitigation into the home. Incredible attention to detail while insulating, and a premium glass and frame system ensure the tightest envelope imaginable for air intrusion and sound transfer. The pearly white exterior and white reflective roof assembly helped to reduce heat load while a high SEER, variable speed HVAC system creates a comfortable indoor environment while managing energy consumption.

BeachHaus – This house took shape from a request for a simple, energy-efficient, contemporary beach cottage. Between a flood zone requiring an elevated structure and a site adjacent to one of the busiest intersections on Siesta Key, the challenge to create a private, laidback environment was significant.
CompassHaus – This LEED Platinum coastal modern home features sleek lines, cantilevered structural elements, and a rear elevation with floor-to-ceiling fenestration that provides dramatic views of the Intracoastal Waterway and adjoining bay. The white exterior and Energy Star-rated roof assembly help reduce heat gain. Many of the interior surfaces are painted white, which augments extensive daylighting.

CompassHaus is intended to be a minimalist design so that only the owners' modern art collection and nature itself are the focus from the interior.

CompassHaus – Our clients' vision was that of a minimalist structure, built beyond the code in terms of structure, systems and performance. The goal was to create the home in such a way that we could reduce our dependency on human infrastructure and also reduce risks related to hurricanes and other storms. The home had to be Net Zero Energy and LEED Platinum Certified, reduce water consumption to a minimum, take advantage of all of the incredible views that the site offered and offer a great indoor/outdoor lifestyle.

The lot offers large bay views and is flanked by threecanals, each with their own interesting views and challenges. The primary views of the master and common spaces focus north, up the Intracoastal Waterway. The rear elevation opens up the to the Sarasota Bayfront. The landscape was critical to this project. The minimalist goals of the architecture translated to the landscape.

Best in Green (BIG) Awards was held at the IBS Live Booth in the South hall. This is the second year of a new green awards program that focuses on integration. Instead of a completely separate awards program, green and sustainable categories have been incorporated into many of NAHB's other award programs. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has named the recipients of the 2011 LEED for Homes Awards, recognizing projects, developers and home builders who have demonstrated leadership in the residential building marketplace. The awards will be presented during the Residential Summit on Thursday, Oct. 6, during the 2011 Greenbuild International Conference & Expo held in Toronto. The 2011 award categories recognize innovative multi and single family projects, production builders, affordable housing projects and developers, an overall commitment to LEED for Homes, and Project of the Year.
